The epidemic of domestic violence in our society is mind boggling. Domestic Violence has no boundaries, it crosses all religious, racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, national origin, socialeconomic class, lines.
*An estimated 3 to 4 million women a each year are the victims of a non-fatal acts of violence by an intimate partner.
*Every nine seconds a woman somewhere is beaten.
*Between 1973 and 1999 an average of 2000-4000 women a year are killed as a result of domestic violence.
*Over 75% of homicide's occur while the victim is attempting to leave or has recently left an abusive relationship.
*There are over twice as many animal shelters in the United States are there are Domestic Violence Centers.
These acts of violence not only affect men, women or other intimate partners, they also have long lasting and dramatic effects on the lives of the children who witness them. God forbid these acts of violence be carried out against one of our children.
Victims can be anyone! Your sibling, your parent, your neighbor, your friend, your child. If you know someone in an abusive relationship, please do not turn a blind eye. Offer your support, understanding, and stretch out your hand to someone in need. It could save someone's life literally. You CAN make a difference.
I myself left a domestically violent relationship of six years in January of 2002. Since then I have found there are so many more out there living this dreaded nightmare. I want to be one that stretches out my hand to help others who are in need as I was. Finding the courage and resources they need to change their lives, and the lives of their children, can sometimes feel like and impossible feat for someone used to living in the role of a victim.
